Tip Calculator
Calculate tip, total bill, and split between people.
What It Does
Tip Calculator computes your tip amount, final total, and per-person share in real time. Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage (or enter a custom one), and specify the number of people splitting the bill to get an instant breakdown.
Tipping Guide by Service Type
- Sit-down restaurant — 15% adequate, 18% good, 20%+ excellent
- Buffet — 10% is typical since service is limited
- Takeout / counter service — optional; 10–15% is appreciated
- Food delivery — 10–20%; tip more for long distances or bad weather
- Taxi / rideshare — 10–15%
- Hair salon / barber — 15–20%
- Hotel housekeeping — $2–5 per night, left daily
Quick Mental Math
To calculate a 20% tip mentally: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $65 bill: 10% = $6.50, 20% = $13.00. For 15%: find 10%, then add half of that. On $65: $6.50 + $3.25 = $9.75.
Tips for Group Splits
Equal splits work well when everyone ordered similarly. For mixed orders, consider splitting the tip proportionally to each person's subtotal. When splitting with a group, it is often faster to use round numbers — rounding each person's share up by a dollar or two also benefits the server.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically more precise, but tipping on the post-tax total is common and makes mental math easier. The difference is usually small — on a $50 bill with 8% tax, the difference between tipping on pre- vs post-tax is about $0.80 at 20%.
- What is a standard tip percentage at a restaurant?
- 15% is the traditional minimum for adequate service, 18% for good service, and 20% or more for excellent service. Counter service and takeout is generally optional, with 10–15% being common.
- How does the bill split work?
- The total (bill + tip) is divided equally among the number of people. This assumes everyone splits the bill evenly. If people ordered very different amounts, you may want to split the tip proportionally instead.
- What tip percentage is expected for services other than restaurants?
- Hair stylists and barbers: 15–20%. Taxi and rideshare: 10–15%. Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night. Delivery drivers: 10–20% (more for difficult conditions). Always consider the quality and circumstance.
- How do I calculate a tip quickly without a calculator?
- For 20%, move the decimal one place left (10%) and double it. For 15%, find 10% then add half. Example: on a $48 bill, 10% is $4.80, so 20% is $9.60 and 15% is $7.20.
